Hello, i recently got an emailer at a carboot sale, previous owner didn't want any money for it, unfortunately when i plug it in it makes a High pitched squealing sound and not much else, when its unplugged the squealing dies away and the speaker makes a pop
when i opened the device i discovered a Coil and a Chip would get slightly warm, another coil was producing the noise.
unfortunately i cannot attach the files due to the size limit
the chip that gets warm is a Conexant SMARTSCM/56
if anyone is competant with repairing these could they tell me which components to check for shorts?
i plan to hopefully install the final update onto this emailer somehow if it hopefully isn't deactivated
cheers

Well the emailer is old now so things on it will stop working eventually. The Conexant SMARTSCM/56 is the modem so do not see it doing that, so it must be something else, there might be something else blown on the board.

I have done a continuity check on one of the Hot coils and it appears to have a 558/559 Ohm Short to Ground, and confirming the coils are soldered suspiciously close to the DC In jack, i suppose something in the powerline side of things is shorted, the Power supply seems to be outputting 25.8 volts instead of the rated 28v so maybe that has also something to do with it, trying to measure the power lines while it is plugged in yields no results assuming something is dragging down the the main power rails.

Thinking about it I think mine making that noise too but I can hear is from the headset on my E2 Plus that has the configuration change on it, its in its box so have not tried it in a long time, might not even boot now, I quickly turned it off... I do have E1 and E3 too all in the boxes. Look I have a tower...
